We are locals and my husband chose to celebrate his birthday.  We have been to The Rankin Street Vault before but it had been a long time.  I would say we were taken back by the change in the place and in the food. 
My husband chose the Rankin Burger for his birthday feast.  He requested the burger to be medium rare.  There was no hint of even pink in the burger he received.  The HNG meat couldn't save this burger.  
I had the housemade black bean burger and it was really good. So much better than the out of the box black bean burger and really enjoyable.  
My sister, in attendance at our "birthday celebration, ordered the Philly Cheese Sammy.   She reported that while the meat was plentiful she was less than impressed with the flavor but optimized her tater tots encounter.

The inside aspect of the restaurant needs a bit of an update and some elbow grease coupled with being loved on seeking it's former glory could be employed as well.  The birthday celebration was less yummy than we had hoped but  hopefully, if we go again ,we'll have a better experience.  Perhaps this was just on "off night."

The food in the beer is great and we really enjoyed the bar as it has a nice hip fob. The biggest problem is in the middle of July. The air conditioning is not working and it is insanely hotter inside than it is outside. It’s kinda hard to eat and enjoy the food when your butt is so sweaty and you’re falling off the streets.

Wife and I were visiting Asheville for the Southern Highland Craft show at the Civic Center.  We parked in the Civic Center garage, and walked out to Rankin street, not knowing a thing about this area of town.  We strolled up Rankin a bit, and saw a sign above the door of this place touting Asheville's best burgers.  So, we went it.  You order at the end of the bar and then sit down.  They bring your food to your table.  We each got the smash burger and tater tots, and just had water (self serve) to drink.  These burgers are absolutely amazing, and so are the tots.  We live in Greenville SC, and this burger beats anything we've had so far.  Atmosphere is dive-bar and cool as hell.

This is a busy happening bar - seemed to have nice staff except for unpleasant woman behind bar who seemed to be in charge. I always find it hard to accept curt almost rude behaviour it is so unnecessary. Anyway it is a hopping place to go.

What a find!  This place appears to be a hole in the wall, but the food is quality!   Touted as the best burger in Asheville; it doesn’t disappoint. And the tater tots are great.  The biggest surprise is the PBR with pickle juice.  Weirdly satisfying and addictive. Don’t knock it until you try it.  The staff is very welcoming too.

Come for the tattoos and stay for the burgers!
